Chaperone service

The University of Reading offers an excellent environment for both work and study, with its campus spanning over 350 acres of picturesque, park-like grounds that provide a calm and relaxing atmosphere.

However, Security Services acknowledge that the vast size of the university may leave some staff or students feeling vulnerable, especially when studying or working late at night and returning to their accommodation or vehicles.

To address these concerns, offer peace of mind, and enhance safety for everyone on campus, Security Services provide a chaperone service to provide reassurance and support.

This service operates in three ways:

Vehicle escort

When possible, two security team members will arrive in a vehicle to pick you up and transport you to your destination.

On-foot escort

A member of the security team will walk with you to ensure you reach your destination safely.

Hawk-eye service

Security can monitor your journey via CCTV, keeping track of your location to ensure you feel safe as you return to your car or accommodation.

How the service works

To use the service you will be asked the following questions:

  1. Your name
  2. Your mobile phone number
  3. Your present location
  4. Your intended location

Important information

  • The service is subject to operational demands. However, Security will make every effort to assist anyone in need.
  • If using the hawk-eye service, Security will acknowledge the start and end of your journey, but they cannot always stay on the phone with you for the entire time as this would occupy limited phone lines in the Security office.
  • Be aware some areas of your route may not be covered by CCTV.
  • The service is available 24/7.

To use the service, or for further advice, please contact Security on 0118 378 7799.
