Going into the professional world can be daunting, but for Jasroop, her placement year was a reassuring learning experience thanks to the constant support she received from the University and the team she was working with.

“I never felt alone or overwhelmed, which can be common when entering the professional working world for the first time.”

Jasroop is a recent Biomedical Sciences with Professional Experience graduate. By choosing to take a year in industry Jasroop got the opportunity to work with Cancer Research UK & UCL Cancer Trials Centre as a trials assistant after her second year.

“This placement has been an invaluable and exciting experience, both academically and professionally, I have become more independent and confident. I have gained an array of skills and knowledge that has helped me immensely for my final year and for job interviews.”

She emphasised the importance of certain skills, such as organisational skills, effective communication, and time management that helped her immensely, especially when she was completing her final year research project, where she achieved a final mark of 83%.

Why the University of Reading?

Jasroop knew that Reading was the right place for her – from the vast green campus to the amazing facilities for biomedical scientists.

“The campus and the new department building are fantastic. The university has invested millions in a new health and life sciences building, which is the home of the School of Biological Sciences and includes research and teaching laboratories.”

Of course the course content has to be right and Jasroop was very impressed with the degree itself. The various modules were well structured and provide a great balance of “deep technical knowledge as well as developing the soft skills required to succeed in a postgraduate environment.”

“One of the decisive factors for choosing Reading was because biomedical sciences at the University is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology….The compulsory and list of optional modules are diverse enough to offer great choices. The University offers limitless opportunities, the lecturers and resources are second to none, and as a whole, the University of Reading is a supportive, approachable, and friendly community energy.”
