Community at the Chaplaincy

Life at the University can be full of challenges. Sometimes it helps to speak to somebody. All of the chaplains are available to provide a listening ear. Feel free to call, email or just drop in.

"The Chaplaincy has been an indispensable comfort for me over the past year. They have helped me deal with being as far from home as I am a lot better than I could have on my own. Everyone involved with it is always ready to listen and to help and they have all been a great benefit to me in terms of both faith and pastoral support".

Pastoral Care and Social Events

We'd love to see you at any time, and are open Mondays to Fridays, 9am-5pm. Please join us for one of our many Regular Weekly Events (often food-related!), or for one of our one-off events throughout the semester. These include retreats, walks and services. Many of the activities are the same each semester, for example, mindfulness workshops, and bread-making sessions (you make it, we bake it...).

Fairtrade

We're committed to Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products. You're welcome to buy a Fairtrade snack or drink in the centre, and use our kitchen facilities. We also help hold two Fairtrade events each year - a Christmas Fayre in the autumn, and a fortnight of themed activities in the spring.

Events aimed at international students

The Chaplaincy supports the work of International Focus on campus. Run by volunteers from Reading and students, this group organises Friday evening social events and great value trips around Britain. See Small World Café for more details.

Newcomers Group

The Newcomers Group exists to welcome family members - both UK and international - of those studying and working at the University of Reading. We are a friendly and welcoming group of British volunteers and "newcomers". Children are welcome and we have toys and books for them. We meet every Thursday morning in university semester-time from 10.30 a.m. until 12 noon at the Chaplaincy (Building 40 - Park House Lodge) behind the Library on the Whiteknights Campus. Tea and coffee are free and we have biscuits too! We can help with English conversation. Visit the Newcomers Facebook page to contact us or email: w.newcomers-group@reading.ac.uk.

The Chaplaincy Library

Our theology library is available for all to use. Any of the 1200+ books on a variety of topics may be borrowed. Download a copy of our searchable Chaplaincy Library Book List (pdf).
