Edith MorleyAreas of interest
Victorian literature and culture, specifically fiction, theatre, women’s writing and history, actresses, historiography, and Shakespeare’s Victorian after-life.
I recently completed a book on Britain in 1859, paying particular attention to George Eliot’s life and work in that year, and to how ‘custom’ operates socially, politically, and scientifically at the time. I am now working on a Very Short Introduction to Victorian Literature for Oxford University Press, and will soon be embarking on a project on cheerfulness, capitalism, and community since 1800.
Postgraduate supervision
I am happy to supervise PhD students working in any area of Victorian literature and culture.
