Rebecca Lindsay is an Internal Communications Manager who studied BA English Literature and Philosophy, M(Res) Children’s Literature and a PhD in the Department of English Literature.
In her story she shows how the MRes, in particular, helped prepare her for her career.
"When I embarked on my journey to pursue a Masters (MRes) in Children's Literature at the University of Reading, I had no idea how profoundly it would shape my career. This programme, renowned for being the oldest accredited master's degree in children's literature in Britain, provided me with a unique blend of academic rigor and practical skills that have been invaluable to me as an Internal Communications Manager."
A foundation of close reading and critical thinking
"The MRes in Children's Literature at Reading is designed to offer an in-depth understanding of the history and approaches to children's literature. The programme is interdisciplinary with a focus on readings of perspective, which are incredibly valuable for any career involving communication. It has helped me to cultivate not only my writing skills, but enables me to this day to look analytically at the broader picture of challenges and opportunities in a workplace and make vital connections."
Networking and professional opportunities
"Through the Masters course, I not only had the chance to attend research talks, guest lectures, and seminars, but was also encouraged and supported to share my learnings and build my network through academic conferences. I was lucky enough to secure funding to travel to Finland to represent the University at a children’s literature conference that improved my public speaking and relationship-building skills and was an invaluable addition to my early career CV. I was also supported by the Careers Centre at the University. My mentor gave me invaluable feedback on how to make my CV standout, as well as introducing me to LinkedIn, which I now use almost every day in my career to get insightful peer support and inspiration!"
Career versatility and advancement
"Graduates of the MRes in Children's Literature often find themselves in diverse career paths, and I am no exception. I have journeyed from being an award-winning personal assistant, through several fundraising roles, and now am flourishing as an internal communications manager! For each of these roles, communication has been so important, and the versatility of the critical thinking that my MRes in Children's Literature from the University of Reading offers has been a cornerstone of my professional development.
The programme’s rigorous academic training, practical skill development, and networking opportunities have equipped me with the tools, adaptability and confidence needed to succeed. For anyone considering a career in fundraising, communication and marketing, education, publishing, media, or any field that values critical thinking and creativity, I highly recommend the MRes in Children's Literature at the University of Reading."
