Step 1: The work request: Types of Wren and costs involved
Wrens are logged by the Estates and Facilities Help Desk. There are two types of Wren:
- Feasibility/estimate required
- Project/work approved. Wren examples
Feasibility/estimate required
Used when a customer requires initial advice and/or when it is important that the likely costs are known before the work starts. The logger will need to provide the Help desk with a project code.
An initial customer funding allowance of up to £500 is committed by the client during the logging process. The Project Manager will liaise with you when committing any costs against this allowance.
The first hour’s consultation with a Project Manager is provided FREE OF CHARGE. This allows the Project Manager to advise on the viability of the work and the options available.
If further advice or work is needed the Project Manager will advise the customer of the costs, either to complete the works or to provide a detailed estimate. These costs are set out in a Wren Total Project Estimate (TPE.) Work will only proceed – up to the sum agreed – once the TPE is accepted by the customer.
Project/work approved
Used when it is important for the works to proceed quickly and final costs are of secondary importance. Cost controls will still be in place, and the customer will be kept advised as costs are established.
Status change
The status of a Feasibility/estimate required Wren will change to Project/work approved once a TPE is accepted and the works are approved to proceed. This mechanism ensures we have the necessary approvals before placing any orders with consultants and/or contractors.
