Research
Copying and using a short excerpt from a copyright-protected work for the purposes of non-commercial research and private study is permitted as a Fair Dealing exception under UK copyright law. However, if you publish your research either on the Web or via a traditional publishing channel, you may need to get permission from the copyright holder to include any substantial amount of third party material (including whole photographs or diagrams), unless the use is necessary for the purposes of facilitating specific, germane accompanying critique and does not conflict unfairly with the rights owner’s ‘normal exploitation’.
