Areas of interest

My key teaching and learning interests and areas of scholarship are broad and include student engagement and experience; embedding employability and career learning and the development of students as reflective practitioners. I am currently working on research projects investigating how we can engage students with career learning throughout their time at University and building resilience and other strengths in foundation students to improve engagement and progression. I am also interested in how we can work more effectively with students on student voice and closing the feedback loop; how we can empower students through knowledge, skills and values to be active citizens in addressing global challenges around sustainability and climate change; and, supporting postgraduate researchers to achieve affiliation with the Higher Education Academy.

Background

I read geography and environmental policy as a mature student at Oxford Brookes University. My dissertation research looked at Local Agenda 21 and engagement with underrepresented groups. I took a Pg. Cert. in Education and went onto teach geography at a local secondary school, where I was Head of Geography for a number of years, before transitioning to teaching in Higher Education at Reading. I have previously worked for the Environment Agency and Bracknell Forest Borough Council.
