Our teaching methods

Our master's courses teach skills in thinking critically, analytically and reflectively. You'll learn design as a process that brings together creativity, intellectual curiosity and innovation.

Workshops and seminars

This is where you'll develop fundamental knowledge of typography and specific areas of communication design, research methods, and reflective practice.

You’ll read and discuss key texts, and discuss with your peers in small-group seminars.

Practical work

Create a multiscript typeface family. Engage with experimental publishing strategies for print and digital platforms. Develop visual communication systems that deliver complex information to users.

Depending on your chosen pathway, these are examples of projects you'll embark on as part of your studies.

Collections-based sessions

These sessions are a unique opportunity to take a hands-on approach to exploring the historical objects we hold in our internationally important collections and archives.

You'll get to grips with the materiality and historical contexts of design artefacts, and advance your skills in reflective practice and research methods.

Lectures

Our staff draw on their experience as leading practitioners and researchers to talk on a variety of fascinating subjects. Their lectures will inspire you and further your learning.

You’ll also hear from visiting speakers from our extensive industry network.

Independent project work

All pathways include the option of an independent project. This can stem from your own interests and experience.

We will support you to develop your ideas into a master’s level project.

Shared learning sessions

At postgraduate level, we run shared lectures, seminars and workshops across our master's programmes, so that students with different interests and backgrounds can share their ideas and expertise.
