A warm welcome

First year BSc Consumer Behaviour and Marketing student, Emilia Bish, has thoroughly embraced student life at the University of Reading. Talking about her experience, she says:

“Starting university was daunting but I greatly benefited from the support provided before arriving and then during Welcome Week. I joined group chats for new students before moving into halls, facilitated by the University, which eased the transition by getting to know some halls and course-mates prior to arrival.

Welcome week had lots to offer to help me get orientated, including meeting my Academic Tutor and attending the Freshers Fairs. I settled into my halls – Stenton Townhouses – really well.”

Industry-relevant modules

The course has proven to be a great choice for Emilia, enabling her to work towards pursuing her dream job in marketing.

“I chose to study Consumer Behaviour and Marketing at Reading because it was a unique course that will give me a blend of knowledge and skills.”

“I’m particularly enjoying the first-year modules in ‘Fundamentals of Business and Marketing’ and ‘Consumer Psychology’. I’ve not studied psychology before so it’s fascinating to learn about the psychological principles underlying consumer choices and the main methods and theories used in psychology.

The ‘Research and Professional Skills for Business and Marketing’ module has also helped me build new transferable skills with programmes such as Excel and JASP statistical software.”

Looking forward, Emilia is particularly keen to gain a greater understanding of digital marketing, which features in her second year.

“The ‘Digital Marketing’ module is of real interest to me as it was part of what drew me to this course, and I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback about the module. I am also excited to start looking for a placement year job for my third year and making the most of the support on offer to do this.”

A sociable campus

Emilia has also made the most of extracurricular and social opportunities on campus.

“There are so many options and different societies available. I joined the Reading Knights Dance Society, where you can choose from different classes each day of the week and take part in shows and competitions. The socials are a great way to meet people and joint socials with other societies open up your network even further.”
