Your learning experience

Our teaching is grounded in practice. We keep in touch with new developments in surveying, construction, and energy and environmental engineering. In our research, we engage with today’s problems and anticipate the challenges of tomorrow.

We foster an environment where students and academics learn from one another. You'll have many opportunities to meet others in the School, to collaborate and share knowledge.

Our teaching methods

We employ a range of teaching methods, including a strong focus on practical work. This immerses you in the real-world application of the theory you’ll learn.

Group projects

Collaboration is a vital aspect of working in the industry, and so a key focus of our courses is to help you develop your team-working skills.

You’ll work together with your peers to solve real-world problems and complete ambitious practical assignments.

Visits from guest speakers

Industry professionals are actively engaged with our courses. Our guests share current and topical insights from a range of industry areas, and are eager to network and connect with you.

Our events offer prime opportunities for you to build your personal network, making connections which could lead to a placement, or even future employment.

Applying digital technologies

From hand-held tablets to working with aerial drones for roof surveys, you’ll use industry-standard digital technologies throughout your degree.

You'll master a range of tools in use on today's construction projects, such as building information modelling (BIM), 3D laser scanning and immersive virtual reality environments.

Lectures

Our academics write the textbooks and journal papers from which you will study.

When you attend their lectures, you’ll get direct access to the latest thinking across a broad range of individual subject areas such as construction economics, innovation studies, and smart cities.

Tutorials

We are committed to ensuring that our students receive the best support possible through tutorials, individual meetings and timely feedback.

Site visits

Visits to construction sites, practitioner offices, manufacturing facilities and large-scale urban developments allow you to see construction operations first-hand and gain insights into innovative practice.

Recent visits include the BRE Innovation Park and the National Self Build & Renovation Centre, as well as several manufacturing facilities which focus on prefabricated building projects.

I feel so lucky that we had a chance to use a software called REVIT for my final year project. Learning this software was challenging, but it has helped with my career in Hong Kong. The skills I gained by using REVIT assist me in taking measurements for new-build projects and have helped me to present building briefs.

Construction Live Project

Our undergraduate students have participated in the Construction Live Project.

In a previous project, students were asked to create a nine-metre tall replica of the Barcelona Communications Tower, during a two-week residential trip to the Constructionarium in Norfolk.

Students planned and built a scaled-down building, adhered to industry and budgetary regulations, and worked to a schedule with contractors and industry professionals.

“This experience highlighted exactly what a real construction project entailed, including the importance of detailed planning and teamwork.”

Gain industry experience

Placements offer you an excellent opportunity to enhance your skills and stand out from the crowd when you graduate. They can help shape your interests, enabling you to develop strong foundations for your future career.

We have a dedicated placement officer who will work with you to find a placement that is right for you and your career goals.

An extensive range of companies have offered placements to our students in the past, including Turner & Townsend, Mace, Laing O'Rourke and many others.

Year in Industry

All of our undergraduate degrees offer the opportunity to undertake a one-year paid industry placement before your final year.

This option doesn't appear on UCAS when you apply for your course. Instead, when you begin your degree at Reading, our academics will work with you to decide whether a Year in Industry would be right for you and your career aspirations, and if so, support you to transfer onto a course with this included.

Summer placements

Undertake optional summer placements which are typically 4-16 weeks in duration, taking place between year two and year three.

You’ll be able to source potential placement opportunities at our many networking events, including our annual careers fair. as well as timetabled careers sessions with guest speakers. We provide you with ongoing support and guidance throughout the process.

Interdisciplinary learning

We take an interdisciplinary approach to teaching that reflects the collaborative nature of working in industry.

You'll benefit from studying within the larger School of the Built Environment, which brings Construction Management and Engineering together with Architecture.

We also have close links with the department of Real Estate and Planning within Henley Business School.
