Research projects
Dr Xiaomin Chen’s research interests lie at the intersection of Internet of Things, Machine Leaning, Cyber Security, and Data Privacy. She has rich research experience in applying mathematical, computing, engineering techniques to resolve problems in Networked Cyber-Physical Systems. She is passionate about designing algorithms, models and practical protocols that are more robust, efficient, fair, and sustainable for IoT systems, intelligent transportation systems and UAV-enabled autonomous systems. On top of the underlying networked CPS, she is also interested in practical technologies in enhancing security and privacy of data carried by the physical systems. Her recent work is focused on integrating privacy preserving solutions, such as differential privacy, federated learning, multi-party computation, blind signature into Machine Learning pipeline and striking a trade-off theoretically and empirically between data utility and privacy protection in application domains such as recommender systems, finance systems, digital healthcare, and intelligent sustainable transportation.
She has actively participated in a number of EU projects as a PI or Co-I. She is currently the Scientific Coordinator and PI for host of Horizon Europe project HarmonicAI (2024-2027) and PI for host of Horizon Europe project COVER (2023-2026). She was also Co-I for Northumbria of Horizon Europe project EVOLVE (2023-2026) and Co-I for Northumbria of EU Erasmus+ project DigiHealth-Asia (2021-2024).
