Discovering the perfect fit
When Ben was exploring his university options, the BSc Biological Sciences with Professional Experience degree at the University of Reading immediately caught his eye.
It offered the flexibility to delve into all facets of biology while gaining practical industry experience which was exactly what he was looking for.
An exciting opportunity abroad
In his second year, Ben successfully secured a yearlong placement opportunity in Brazil.
“I did my placement year with a company called IATI, which worked primarily on sustainable energy and environmental projects
The microplastics and invasive species work really interested me, and I learnt alot of lab and field skills.”
Ben felt his placement year was valuable as he was able to apply aspects of biology that he had learnt at university in the world of work and helped him understand what topics he preferred the most.
“Having done a placement has enabled me to finalise where I’d like to be in Biology.
I’ve chosen this degree because I get the opportunity to figure out what I enjoy and having done a placement I can then make sure I want to apply that to a business setting.”
Placement support
The School of Biological Sciences has a dedicated member of staff in charge of placements, who will provide advice and support throughout your placement journey to ensure you get the best experience from your year in industry.
“When applying for my placement I got alot of support from the placement support officer here at Reading
I had two opportunities, one in Brazil, one in the Seychelles and they were able to guide me, and were able to suggest what would right for me and would align with my degree.”
