The REAPP research centre brings together Reading’s moral and political philosophers, and those with related interests in the law and elsewhere.
We investigate a wide range of pressing, normative questions faced by individuals, societies, and political systems, drawing primarily on the tools of analytic philosophy and political theory. Our aim is to understand them and, where appropriate, help solve them.
Our vision is to use these tools to understand and hopefully help solve pressing theoretical and practical issues, including:
- the ethics of migration and border controls
- resistance to political authority
- the consciousness and welfare of animals
- the ethics of risk and uncertainty
- the promise and pitfalls of political humour
- hate speech, disinformation and “counterspeech”
- the political thought of Thomas Hobbes
- the nature of rationality and reasons.
