My teaching focuses on helping students produce solutions to design problems by looking carefully at the world and the people in it. I try to connect the dots between what we can observe (in life and in design), what we can learn (through reading and practice), and what we can produce (by hand or with modern tools). In this way, I seek to help students become immediately effective when they hit the working world, where they can build a reputation as thoughtful, research-led practitioners.Teaching
I teach across our undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes, focusing on typography, UX, information design, software learning, and professional development. I’m a teaching-intensive member of staff, which allows me to get to know our students well. My responsibilities around careers and our alumni network means I stay in touch with graduates after they leave and look for opportunities to bring alumni back to the Department to share their expertise. As Director of Teaching & Learning, I oversee our undergraduate programme, ensuring its continual improvement while maintaining the standards it is known for. I have for many years lead our ‘Real Jobs’ professional practice scheme, supporting students as they engage in client work for the first time. Background
As graduate of the Department's undergraduate programme, my career led me to work in information design, branding, and design management, both in the private sector and at the University of Reading. These experiences helped form my interest in the relationship between brand management and high performing design studios, and in the idea that good brands are rooted in positive underlying values such as clarity and simplicity regardless of how they look on the surface.Academic qualifications
