Local growth and regeneration

Local Growth and Regeneration (LG&R) describes the activities where higher education institutions, businesses, public sector and the wider civil society work together to achieve a strategic goal with a prime focus on LG&R in a self-defined local area. This may include local economic development, social inclusion, public space or infrastructure improvements and reconversion of brownfield sites, public and community engagement, arts and cultural programmes and provision of skills training.

LG&R aligns with the concept of the Civic University where universities develop and embed civic aspirations at an institutional level, as well as working with government and strategic partners to ensure that a University’s geographical role and responsibility is used to effectively to drive positive societal change.

LG&R is driven by government policy that is often reflected in the strategic goals of funders such as UKRI for example, Strength In Places or University Enterprise Zones.
