What we do
The Commercial Function provides academics with the information and resources they need to undertake knowledge exchange, commercial development of their research outputs and successful management of their intellectual property.
Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation (KEC) is recognised by government and funders as having an important return on the UK's investment in research, one that provides a significant driving force for enhancing economic growth and societal wellbeing. For researchers KEC can be a way of gaining new perspectives on possible directions and approaches for research.
The Commercial Function brings together the Knowledge Transfer Centre (KTC) and the Commercial Projects Team who are leading the strategic development of the University's assets, including the Thames Valley Science Park (TVSP).
Our purpose is to:
- drive engagement with business, bringing together and connecting across the University
- build a community of knowledge exchange (KE) across the University, and with external partners to enhance excellence in research, teaching and learning, and public and community engagement
- steer the University’s role in placemaking in the region, building and managing relationships with key stakeholders to deliver local growth and regeneration
- ensure a thriving innovation ecosystem across the University and the region and drive a culture of innovation
- support University enterprise and lower the barriers to entry for all.
- manage the governance and reporting for the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF), the main fund to HEIs to support KE, and the University’s submission of the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) and KE Concordat.
We work with academics, other professional services and external partners to deliver a range of KE activities, commercialisation services and commercial projects.
