Getting involved
Each one of us has a responsibility and an obligation to work in a way that creates a welcoming and inclusive environment.
We do this through our behaviour with our colleagues, through the curriculum we offer, the fair and transparent way we make decisions, and by making sure our committees and decision-making groups have a diverse membership.
There are a variety of ways to get involved and make Reading a more inclusive environment for everyone. For example, you can visit our events page to see upcoming dates in our seminar series, or join a self-assessment team in the lead-up to a charter mark application.

Call out bad behaviour
We've all witnessed unacceptable behaviour. Why not intervene? Call it out, offer support, or diffuse the situation.
Use the "UHT" method:
"I understand that you meant no harm by your comment, however, it is offensive to me or others. Therefore, I would appreciate it if you didn't do that again."

Contact your local diversity lead
Get in touch with a diversity lead to see how you can help within your own school or function.

Join a network
If you want to get more involved, why not join one of our equality networks, attend a network event, or become an LGBT Plus Ally? These networks are open to everybody.
Complete your diversity training
To understand your responsibilities more clearly, we ask all staff to complete the Diversity in the Workplace learning module.
Update your personal details
You can help us better understand our staff and students - and how diverse we truly are - by updating your personal details on Employee Self-Service. If you're unsure about updating your information, read Stonewall's tongue-in-cheek take on why this data is important.
Your disclosure is strictly confidential and you can find out more about how we use your data on the Staff Portal. To update your details, select "Personal" and then "Sensitive Information" after logging into Employee Self-Service.
Read about supportive and inclusive behaviours
We are all accountable for our behaviour towards one another at work. You can learn more about how to help create an inclusive environment in our Code of Good Practice and Values for Working Together documents. Meanwhile, our Curriculum Framework Project highlights our commitment to the inclusive design of our curriculum, teaching and assessment methods.

As Business Disability Forum members we have access to information and resources on delivering a disability-smart business. Register using your @reading email address.
