Sanjeev grew up in the Nilgiris - a district in Tamil Nadu, India - profoundly impacted by the relentless forces of climate change. Seeing his hometown severely effected by extreme weather, along with the aftermath it left on the residents of the town, ignited his passion to fight climate change.

“In my search for universities, the University of Reading emerged as an undeniable beacon of hope and knowledge. Renowned for its groundbreaking expertise in climate change research, the University stood tall as a leader in unravelling the intricacies of this pressing global issue. It boasts a faculty composed of brilliant minds dedicated to understanding the causes and effects of climate change, and tirelessly working towards innovative solutions. The prospect of learning from and collaborating with such distinguished individuals invigorated my aspirations.”

Preparing to make a difference

The MSc Climate Change and Artificial Intelligence (AI) course at Reading is designed to address the growing demand for individuals with understanding of both our changing climate and artificial intelligence, together with the business acumen to deploy that understanding effectively. The course provides a solid foundation for Sanjeev’s future career plans.

“My career goal is to work at the intersection of climate change and AI, leveraging artificial intelligence technologies to develop sustainable and efficient solutions for environmental issues. I aspire to contribute to the development of AI-driven tools, models, and policies that can aid in climate change adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable resource management.

“This course provides a comprehensive understanding of climate science, environmental policy, data analytics, machine learning, and other relevant skills. These skills are essential for conducting research, designing AI algorithms, analysing climate data, and developing intelligent systems to tackle climate-related challenges.”

Highly rewarding

Sanjeev has enjoyed studying a variety of topics throughout the course, including: climate modelling, artificial intelligence, data-driven decision-making, and causal inference.

“These topics allow me to explore how AI techniques can be applied to climate data analysis, enabling accurate predictions, and informing effective climate policies. The combination of technical skills and the potential to contribute to real-world climate solutions has been highly rewarding for me.”

He has also valued the combination of disciplines the course offers – drawing expertise from the Department of MeteorologyDepartment of Computer Science, the Walker Institute and the triple-accredited Henley Business School – the first, and currently only, postgraduate course of its kind in the UK.

“The interdisciplinary aspect of the course has been incredibly valuable. It has allowed me to gain insights from diverse perspectives and collaborate with students and faculty from various disciplines. The interdisciplinary environment has fostered a holistic understanding of climate change challenges, as well as the opportunities that AI can provide. It has also helped me develop skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, which are essential for addressing complex issues in the real world.”
