Life as a master's student

"The MA Film and Creative Enterprise course was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. It gave me my first exposure to filmmaking and taught me the challenges of completing a film.

"The focus on both practice and theory was key. The course provided me with a professional foundation to work in the film industry in the future."

Wanying Zheng, MA Film and Creative Enterprise

A day in the life – Luigi Serino, MA Film and Creative Enterprise

A typical day in the life of a Film, Theatre & Television master's student involves lectures, seminars, screenings or performances, and personal activities.
  • Morning
  • Lunchtime
  • Afternoon
  • Evening

Morning

Luigi gets up nice and early if he has a class at 09:00. Afterwards, he goes back home to get started on some reading and coursework. As he expected from a master’s course, there is a lot of reading to do, but lecturers have managed to keep it fresh and interesting by adding videos or small tasks for next week’s class. Mornings are also his favourite time to go to the gym.

Lunchtime

If there are multiple classes that day, Luigi usually stays on campus and has a bite to eat there (Park Bar and Eat at the Square provide good, reasonably priced foods).

If he has a few hours spare between classes he likes to either sit in the library or in the Department and do some work/reading. When studying in Minghella Studios, he especially likes to work on practical things for the film modules, so if he gets stuck he can ask someone there or go for a stroll around the Department – he always finds inspiration there.

For more conceptual reading such as for the law or management classes, studying at home is essential for Luigi, as he needs the most quiet and peaceful environment.

Afternoon

Luigi's entrepreneurship and law modules are in the afternoon, which he likes as he has time to revise in the morning. It’s nice having a mixture of morning and afternoon classes, so you can sleep in or finish early.

Late afternoon is usually when clubs and societies hold their events. The drama society (RUDS) is very popular among students in the Department of Film, Theatre & Television (they rehearse and stage a couple of plays per term), or you can join one of the many sports clubs.

Evening

In the evening, Luigi usually watches a film or attends a talk in the Department.

Life on campus

Reading has one of the best university environments I've seen – I love the lawns and garden. When I joined the diving club, I met people from different courses and countries.
