Current Projects:

Developing meteorological forecasts for the early warning of hazards in the glacierized catchments of Central Asia. Project is funded by the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) core project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP)

Background

Gavkhar joined the Department of Geography and Environmental Science in July 2022, as a Research Fellow working towards the development of meteorological forecasts for the early warning of debris flows in Central Asia. Debris flow is a common hazard in mountainous areas which intensity and frequency are increasing. She applies the state-of-the-art forecast products from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in this project.

She has previously worked at the Hydrometeorological Research Institute in Uzbekistan where her research experience was primarily focused on the potential impact of global warming on precipitation induced natural hazards in the piedmont and mountainous areas of Central Asian countries.

She completed her PhD at the University of Birmingham, in 2019, during which she investigated the link between the potential effects of large-scale atmospheric conditions and extreme debris and mud flow occurrences in Uzbekistan under current and future climates.

Academic qualifications

PhD (Atmospheric Sciences), University of Birmingham

MSc (Hydrology), BSc (Hydrometeorology), National University of Uzbekistan
