This module is aimed at practising healthcare professionals who are in roles requiring, or that will require, advanced skills in management, leadership, and education within a clinical setting. The module can be studied stand-alone or as part of the MSc in Advancing Healthcare Practice. The course covers the non-clinical aspects of advanced practice that are core to the multi-professional framework for advanced clinical practice in England. This module is particularly suited to students who are working in or planning to take a role as an independent prescriber and/or advanced clinical practitioner.
This 20-credit module will focus on supporting practitioners to apply leadership and education theories and practices to advanced clinical roles. The workshops will focus on a wide range of leadership and education theories and their practical application in clinical settings. The module is assessed through a portfolio of reflections and activities such as teaching, clinical assessment of colleagues and a leadership activity (such as quality improvement, service development or change management).
This module is run as a series of four study days; the weeks when you are not attending study days are timetabled for directed study. Between each workshop, there are online activities to complete. It is up to students when they complete these online activities, and whether they aim to achieve them between each workshop or complete them together on the directed study days.
Other self-directed study time may be required, depending on individual learning plans, to complete the portfolio. Directed study time is included on the timetable as a guide. However, we encourage students and employers to discuss when and how protected study time is allocated so that it promotes positive work-study-life balances for individual students, whilst recognising the need to maintain a service provision.
