Areas of interest

Lucy Tyler is a scholar, performance maker, dramaturg and emerging somatic movement practitioner. Her written work explores embodied and creative artistic processes, focusing on how artists and writers develop themselves and their work. She has over fifteen years’ experience of teaching performance making in Higher Education. In her scholarship, Lucy foregrounds anti-capitalist and anti-rascist Marxian methods to contribute to decolonisation, decommodification and democratisation of the arts. She is author of numerous articles and chapters on performance development and the forthcoming English Play Development under Neoliberalism (Cambridge, 2024). As a producer of new performance for diverse communities, she is PI on the Arts Council-funded Work in Progress which seed-funds and facilitates new performance making. Her performance practice is one in which intermedial embodiment exposes the interrelationships of care, m/othering, and ecology. Lucy is one half of Elements Eco Soma Lab, based at Ayres House Studios, Oxfordshire. Elements creates eco somatic workshops and movement series for artists, body practitioners and curious beings. Before beginning her professional somatic training, Lucy has practised performance focused devising, direct expression, Iyengar and Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga for 20 years.

Postgraduate supervision

I welcome enquiries from prospective doctoral students, especially those interested in: new performance making, cultural theory, Marxism, neoliberalism and/or political economy of performance, any work that interrogates new theatre practice either in theoretical and/or practical terms.  I have supervised to completion two practice-based doctoral projects in the field of live art.

Teaching

I teach across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, including practical modules as well as theoretical modules in Theatre and Performance, and across a number of shared modules in Theatre and Performance, and across a number of shared modules with Television and Film.  I supervise Advanced Practical Projects in Theatre, including both scripted and devised work and, each year, I also supervise a number of large-scale performances.
