Background

Sharon is a distinguished teaching-intensive academic who joined the School of Law in August 2018, having previously served at the University of Southampton, where she taught Public Law as well as Legal Systems and Reasoning. Currently, Sharon holds the positions of Deputy Head of School and the School Director of Teaching & Learning, overseeing academic provision and pedagogical strategy across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Her teaching portfolio spans the full academic spectrum, ranging from foundation and international transfer students to final-year undergraduates, with subject expertise encompassing core modules and advanced dissertation supervision in healthcare law and ethics.

Sharon’s innovative pedagogical leadership has been recognised through the conferral of a prestigious University Teaching Fellowship, awarded for her substantial contributions to addressing digital poverty, promoting diversity and inclusion, and advancing assessment feedback practices. She has consistently collaborated with student partners in a range of projects, championing student engagement and ensuring their perspectives are integrated into curriculum development.

As module convenor for the core “Legal Skills” course, Sharon has restructured the curriculum to embed diversity and inclusion, and is actively engaged in research exploring the pedagogical and societal benefits of such reforms. Her past involvement in a successful PLanT project on learning disabilities within blended learning environments yielded outcomes that have been disseminated both internally and externally.

Academically, Sharon holds both an LLB (Hons) and an LLM (Distinction) from the University of Surrey. Her previous academic appointments include Associate Lecturer at the University of Winchester, where she covered Human Rights, Medical Law, Mental Health Law, and Legal Systems. In addition, Sharon is qualified as an English Language instructor, having taught English as a Foreign Language to international cohorts at the University of Winchester.

Sharon’s primary research interests lie in healthcare law, medical ethics, and the intersection of Roman Catholic doctrine with healthcare policy, particularly in relation to abortion and end-of-life issues. She has published scholarly work on higher education pedagogy, with an emphasis on employability skills, reflective practice, and digital literacy within legal education.

Prior to her legal academic career, Sharon amassed 25 years of industry experience in IT, working for multinational corporations such as Hewlett-Packard, Unisys, BT Syntegra, and the AA, in addition to specialised IT firms, where she managed critical projects for several FTSE 100 clients.
