The UoR Staff Laptop

The standard UoR staff computing device is a Microsoft Surface Windows Laptop. This is a "medium-high computing" device which is suitable for most users who generally work using Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams). It can also cope with more demanding processing or graphic work than a basic model would, and is suitable for Camtasia video editor and Yuja Learning Capture software.

Apple vs Microsoft

If you decide on an Apple MacBook, please ensure that you can perform all your required functions with macOS. Accessing University corporate systems and other software applications may not be easily available for macOS or might not be covered by our existing Windows software licences.

You may be asked to provide a business justification (e.g. specific software needed, departmental requirement) for the purchase of a MacBook.

Stock and availability

Whilst every effort is made to keep up to date with current stock, models do become unavailable or are replaced at short notice. Current stock items can be found on the XMA page on Unit4 marketplace (Agresso), or via search on XMA website. Please raise a ticket with DTS if you would like specific advice.

Peripherals

For long-term working on campus or at home, we recommend you connect your laptop to an external monitor, a separate keyboard and a mouse. This table shows the extras you need to set yourself up working.

Working on campus  Working remotely
Docking station to power laptop and connect peripherals USB hub to connect peripherals (connected to the laptop power supply)
External monitor(s) Recommended: External monitor

A note about peripherals for Macs

As Apple now supports USB-C (aka Thunderbolt), most of the peripherals we have listed work for both Windows and Mac via USB-C. Some Mac specific peripherals also listed.

Docking station or USB hub

A docking station (or dock) has additional USB-C and USB-A ports so you can connect different peripherals. You can also charge your laptop battery through the dock. If you have a local wired network connection, the dock also has an Ethernet port for this.

Note if you have more than one monitor, you will need a dock as the laptop by itself does not support the two connections.

Docking stations (docks)

USB hubs

If you need more USB ports for your peripherals (e.g. if you have a mouse, keyboard and a headset to plug in) but you don’t need Ethernet (wired connection to the network), you can use a USB Hub instead. There are many variants available and what you need depends on what plugs into your laptop (from your Surface or MacBook, this is USB-C) and what outputs you require for peripherals (USB-A or USB-C or a mix).

Current stock items can be found on the XMA page on Unit4 marketplace (Agresso), or via search on XMA website.

Monitor and cables

Standard monitor

The standard monitor is a 24" height adjustable flat screen monitor (or you could go bigger with a 27" monitor). Several departments use two 24" monitors on their desks.

Current stock items can be found on the XMA page on Unit4 marketplace (Agresso), or via search on XMA website.

Note monitors should be flat screen and must be height adjustable.

Cables - monitor connections

Cable and adapter stock fluctuates rapidly. Current stock items can be found on the XMA page on Unit4 marketplace (Agresso), or via search on XMA website.

To connect a monitor (HDMI, DVI or VGA) directly to a Surface (USB-C), you will need one of:

To connect a monitor (HDMI, DVI or VGA) into a Surface dock (mini display port), you will need as many cables as you have monitors (one cable is required per monitor).

Apple products have a USB-C (or Thunderbolt) connectivity so any USB-C cable is suitable. If you want one that specifically states Apple, try:

Mini Display Port Adapter

Most recent monitors are HDMI, however if you don't know what the input is, then choose the 3-in-1 Mini Display Port Adapter. This will connect any monitor type (HDMI/VGA/DVI) to your Surface dock (Mini display port). Useful if you don't know what type of input your monitor has, or if you are ordering for someone else.

Apple USB-C AV Multiport Adapter

The USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter lets you connect your USB-C—enabled Mac, iPad or iPhone to an HDMI display, while also connecting a standard USB device and a USB-C charging cable. Connect the adapter to a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) connector on your Mac, iPad or iPhone, and then you can connect to your TV, monitor or projector via an HDMI cable.

Other items

Keyboard & Mouse

A wireless UK keyboard and mouse, which requires a USB port for the wireless receiver.

Alternatively, a wired keyboard and mouse, each will need a USB port:

Many other types of keyboard and mice are available, including ergonomic if required. Current stock items can be found on the XMA page on Unit4 marketplace (Agresso), or via search on XMA website.

Laptop riser

If you aren't using a separate monitor, you can use a riser to get your laptop to the recommended height. There are various different types available on the XMA page, this is just one option.

Headset

You will be most comfortable on long Teams calls using a headset, which also leaves your hands free to take notes. Any headset with a microphone and USB connection (check which your laptop has, USB-A or USB-C) is suitable. We recommend either Sennheiser (EPOS) or Jabra.

Current stock items can be found on the XMA page on Unit4 marketplace (Agresso), or via search on XMA website.

Webcam

Desktops don't have a webcam and the camera on an older laptop might not have the best picture. If you're using a desktop, or you'd like a separate camera for your laptop, you can buy a webcam. There are several on the XMA website, we recommend this one:

Laptop bag, slip case or rucksack

If you are travelling with your laptop, even if it's from home to work and back again, you should protect it with a slip case, rucksack or laptop bag. A bag is also useful to keep all your cables, headset etc. together. There are various types available on the XMA page on Unit4 marketplace (Agresso), or via search on XMA website.
