Clearing your Browser Cache and Cookies

If you are having trouble logging on to a web page on reading.ac.uk that requires authentication, then this can be caused by invalid information being stored within the browser on your device. This issue can be resolved by either using another browser that is installed on your device or clearing the invalid information that is stored in your browser. Below are procedures to clear the browser cache and cookies for popular browsers on a desktop.

Microsoft Edge

To clear your browser cache and cookies in Edge please follow the procedure below:

1. At the top right please click on three bars
2. Then select Clear Browsing History
3. Then check only 'Cookies and saved website data' and 'Cached data and files'
4. Then press the Clear button
5. Alternatively, please try in InPrivate browsing (press Ctrl+Shift+P)

Google Chrome

To clear your browser cache and cookies in Chrome please follow the procedure below:

1. At the top right please click on the three bar menu,
2. Then select More Tools > Clear Browsing Data...
3. Then set the dropdown labelled 'Clear the following items from:' to 'the beginning of time'
4. Then only check "Cached images and files" and "Cookies and other site data"
5. Then press the "Clear browsing data" button on this dialogue
6. Alternatively, please try in incognito mode (press Ctrl+Shift+N)

Microsoft Internet Explorer

To clear your browser cache and cookies in Internet Explorer please follow the procedure below:

1. At the top right please click on the tools menu (a cog wheel)
2. Then select "Internet options"
3. Then go to the General tab in the Browsing History section
4. Then press the Delete button
5. Then in the "Delete Browsing History" dialogue only these items should be checked "Temporary Internet files and website files" and "Cookies and website data"
6. Then press the Delete button on this dialogue
7. Alternatively, please try in InPrivate browsing (press Ctrl+Shift+P)

Mozilla Firefox

To clear your browser cache and cookies in Firefox please follow the procedure below:

1. At the top right please click on the three bar menu
2. Then select History
3. Then select 'Clear recent history'
4. Then in 'Time range to clear' please select 'Everything'
5. Then expand 'Details'
6. Then ensure only 'Cookies' and 'Cache' are checked
7. Then press 'Clear Now'
8. Alternatively, please try in New Private Window (press Ctrl+Shift+P)
