Career to date
Prior to joining the IoE, Catherine taught throughout Key Stage 2 and led mathematics in schools in West Berkshire and Oxfordshire. She became a leading mathematics teacher then numeracy consultant for West Berkshire Council, supporting teachers by working alongside them in school as well as leading professional development. She then moved into a national advisory role, working for the Primary National Strategy as a senior adviser in the mathematics team.
Since moving into initial teacher education at the University of Reading in 2010 Catherine has carried out a variety of roles, including Programme Director for the Primary School Direct programme. During this time she completed her educational doctorate focused upon girls’ mathematical identities, and co-wrote a book on Leading Primary Mathematics. More recently she joined the IoE’s senior management group and became Head of Initial Teacher Education, working with colleagues to deliver high-quality and well-regarded teacher education across the early years, primary and secondary phases. Catherine serves on the Local Advisor Board for a local primary school as link safeguarding advisor, and enjoys taking every opportunity to get into school.
Throughout her time at the university Catherine has maintained her passion for helping beginning teachers to teach mathematics confidently, effectively, and with enthusiasm. Believing in a hands-on approach, she most enjoys seeing trainees grow in their own subject knowledge and confidence in being able to use talk, images and concrete resources, modelling, explanation and practice to ensure the children in their classes thrive in their maths learning.
