Psychology master's courses teaching methods

Complement your postgraduate psychology study through NHS-partnered clinics, professional training centres and research placements. You’ll also learn via lectures, seminars, private study, workshops and practical work.

Our MSc psychology courses can be taken full time over one year, or part time over two years.

Teaching and supervision

You’ll be taught and supervised by active researchers. This means you’ll have the opportunity to learn about, and be involved in, the latest research developments.

Access specialist facilities

Access our neuroimaging centre with fMRI, EEG and TMS facilities. We also house NHS-partnered clinics for speech and language therapy, anxiety and depression in young people, and an independent autism centre.

Independent study

You're exposed to a variety of teaching methods and will undertake guided independent study alongside your contact hours. This culminates in the completion of a piece of original research.

Clinical placements

If you choose the clinical placement option on the MSc Theory and Practice in Clinical Psychology course, you can gain experience in:

  • one of several clinics linked to the work of the School
  • an NHS trust
  • or an external placement provider.

This option is ideal if you want to work directly with clients and already have the necessary skills and knowledge to do so. Supervision and training will be given to support your placement.

Develop your knowledge and understanding of clinical topics, including evidence-based treatments and common mental health problems. You will learn valuable research skills and conduct your own clinically relevant research. It is intended that graduates of this course will greatly enhance their employability in clinical settings, either in the UK or internationally.

Research placements

First-hand research involvement is integral to our MSc Research Methods in PsychologyMSc Cognitive Neuroscience and MSc Language Sciences courses. It is also integral if you select the research placement option on the MSc Theory and Practice in Clinical Psychology course.

Placements are undertaken either in one of our research centres, or with one of our School partners.

The research placement option of the MSc Theory and Practice in Clinical Psychology course allows you to undertake a placement involving clinical populations, but without direct client contact. This is suitable if you’re interested in clinical psychology, but want to undertake a broader placement.
